The original design was altered to fit around the architectural concept of the building.

The concept for the planter boxes is to portray the plants as if they are growing out of Kete baskets which were traditionally used to harvest and store food ( among many other things)

This concept fits with Kete Tupuānuku, a  kete filled with the bounty grown within the soil, or harvested from the ground. Tupuānuku is one of nine stars seen within the cluster of Matariki, Te Iwa o Matariki that is connected to kai (food) and rongoā (traditional medicines)

The pavers hold to this title with the idea of a floor mat, a takapau. Crossing the takapau can be seen as arriving home.

A home, a safe place, an area of learning, manaakitanga and whanaunatanga where te mara, the garden, gives us nourishment for body, mind, and spirit.

The side pavers showcase the Kumara plant in bloom and the Mataraki stars,  symbolic that Tupuānuku shone brightly amongst the Matariki stars this year and the promise of a bounty of food was given.
